Kite Cruise to the British Virgin Islands
Located between Puerto Rico and St Martin on the north East of the Caribbean, the BVI's are considered as a true gem for kitesurfing: among the most protected and untouched islands of the Caribbean, they mix constant trade winds (which brought them their reputation of one of the top sailing destination in the world), warm, pristine and turquoise waters (forget the neoprene), which turns them into a magical playground.
The BVI's are made of 4 main islands, all surrounded by multiple smaller ones. |
Along your kitesurfing cruise, you will get to discover the most beautiful kitesurfing sites of the British Virgin Islands: the beautiful lagoon of Virgin Gorda, the site worth your widlest Robinson Crusoe dreams of Jost Van Dyke and the famous Anegada.
Virgin Gorda is very different in its topography and population from its bigger sister Tortola: calmer, friendlier, Virgin Gorda offers a fanatastic lagoon, ideal for kiteboarding, and the numerous surrounding islands reveal magical sites. When the swell turns up, the outter reef becomes a real fun playground (watch out for coral though) and nothing compares to a clear wave through which you can watch fish and turtoises. |
Jost Van Dyke, famous for its diving sites, only offers one real good spot, but it is way worth the sailing there when conditions are met.
Anegada is the summun of the BVI's and has become a reference along kitesurfing cruises those past years: located a few sailing hours away from the other islands, it offers an exceptional characteristic (almost unique in the Caribbean) which is to be exempted of relief. Anegada features, on top of the delight it is for the eyes, the partiularity to benefit from an incredible wind quality and to work with any wind direction. |
This island alone justifies a kitesurfing cruise to the BVI's: it's a dream spot, definitely one of the ones you want to say you've kited at once in your life.
Riding there is a bit like a kitesurfing fantasy come true. Never you've ridden on something this clear, smooth and silky before. And if you're from the lucky ones who get the northerly swell during your stay, we can garantte this will be one of the most insane and unforgettable wave sessions of your life... |
BEST TIME TO GO : The British Virgin Islands are a mind blowing place to spend your christmas at! Be warned though that this time being the most requested, you should enquire way in advance if you wish to book a kitesurfing cruise then. The BVI's windy season starts in Mid December and runs all the way through July -sometimes August-. Best to go before May.
WHEN NOT TO GO: Hurricane season starts (depending on years) roughly in late August and last till early November. As it's a bit of a "all or nothing" scenario wind wise, we do not advise you to go then. Late Spring is rarely good.

Cruises heading to the BVI's usually start from there (probably the easiest option).
They can also start from Anguilla or St Martin (overnight sail for both, beware that the return might be rough). Do count a week long trip minimum due to time loss at customs.
Due to the very high price to fly to Tortola, the BVI's are rarely offered as a departing island for other destinations, the best deal being to start your kite cruise from St Martin, and then sail to the BVI's. Sensitive souls may want then to fly back to St Martin for the return trip (the sailing back will be facing both wind and swell)
